VPN (Gateway): What It is, benefits, and why you should use one?

VPN gateway

VPN stands for “Virtual Private Network” which is designed to establish a “protected” network connection when using public networks, this makes it difficult for third parties to steal your data or track your online activities. In layman’s terms, a VPN establishes a “secure and private” connection to the internet, from your device to the internet.

A VPN gateway (VPN router) then, is a type of networking device that connects two or more devices or networks together in a VPN infrastructure. It is intended to link or communicate between two or more remote sites, networks, or devices, as well as to connect several VPNs.

Many years ago, the acronym “VPN” meant little to an average internet user. VPNs and Cyber Security used to be a major concern for big businesses in a bid to secure their assets. In recent times, Cloud and Cyber Security, in particular, VPN access has been gaining a lot of attention with an increasing user base shifting from major companies to small businesses, remote workers, and simply individuals avoiding Geoblocks and Internet restrictions.

VPN gateways are frequently set up often as individual set-ups or corporate networks are connected through the VPN servers running Routing And Remote Access Service (RRAS). VPN Gateways provide secure connectivity between multiple sites, by channeling your data through a tunnel encrypting your information making sure no third parties have access to it, even if they do, it would take a computer thousands of years to Decipher the information there.

This piece of technology is very important, in a short while I will outline reasons why you should use a VPN gateway. Let’s get started,

What is (a) VPN Gateway?

A VPN gateway is a physical device like a router, server, with working internet capabilities to enable data transmission. However, in most cases, the most easily identifiable VPN gateway is a physical router device. (e.g Your internet provider’s MiFi)

Oftentimes, the installation of a VPN gateway is on the primary VPN site or infrastructure. The VPN gateway is designed to allow, block or route VPN traffic. It carries out core VPN-specific networking services such as dynamic and static routing, IP address assignment and management, and maintaining routing tables.

How does a VPN Gateway work?

A virtual network gateway is composed of two or more Virtual Machines (e.g Google Cloud Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) networks) that are automatically set up and attached to a specific subnet you create called the gateway subnet.

When you set up a virtual network gateway, you create a setting that specifies the gateway type. The virtual network gateway’s functionality is determined by the gateway type.. For example, Gateway “VPN” specifies that the type of virtual network gateway created is a ‘VPN gateway’ distinguishing it from an Express gateway, which uses a different gateway type.

Benefits of VPN gateways

As our lives become more digital daily, the more likely it is for our privacy to be violated, starting from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to web pages and websites collecting your data to monetize or sell to eCommerce companies or even hackers, looking to steal your data, anytime you browse the internet, someone might be watching you.

Also, the increasing number of regional restrictions on the internet has put into perspective the need for a great VPN service with a secure gateway. Here are a few reasons:

  • Browse safely and securely by ensuring that your connection is encrypted and your location is hidden.
  • No fears using a Public WiFi
  • Stay safe when you shop online: Shopping online has become the norm so to speak, practicing safety when you shop is a responsibility of all. When you see an “HTTPS” in your browser’s address bar, this means the website will protect your personal data and credit card information.
  • Unblock access to regional content: Blocked content stops people from getting the information they need to complete projects, remote work. A VPN is an important tool for unblocking websites no matter where you are.

Why you should use one

The answer to whether or not you need a VPN with a secure gateway comes down to what you want and need. Many probably may not require to secure their private networks from cybercriminals, but there are many other good reasons to use VPNs with a secure VPN gateway.

If you use public Wi-FI a lot, like University WiFi, Hotel WiFi worry about your ISP and other third parties snooping on your online activity. If you work from home as well using an apartment WiFi, you are being watched.

The importance of a VPN Gateway depends on your online habits and preferences. Investing in a VPN with a secure Gateway can make a huge difference in keeping you safe and secure online.
