By

Personally, I feel this question is coming a little bit late. I feel the right question should be to what extent is information technology ruling the world?

Now to answer the question to what extent is information technology ruling the world?

Let us consider Information Technology from different perspectives:

  1. Information computing:  computing of information is one of the major aspects of every organization due to the efficiency it adds to the organization. Most businesses moved from books and files for keeping of record to onprem systems and now, the use of cloud. It has been predicted that worldwide IT spending is projected to total $3.9 trillion in 2021.
  1. Mainstream Automation: Information technology has made it easy for almost any type of process to be automated. The reduced cost of running business in terms of money and time due to automation of business is another way information technology is affecting us.  The availability of automated checklists, tracking softwares, computing softwares and others has made running of organizations easier.
  1. Robotic Process Automation: Robotic Process Automation popularly known as RPA is a software technology that makes it easy to build, deploy and manage software robots. They have been gaining increased recognition in enterprises, as they efficiently handle tasks that require a lot of human intervention.
  1. Artificial Intelligence (AI): The field of Artificial Intelligence seeks to simulate the level of intelligence humans have in machines, and to a large extent, they have been quite successful, as we see a lot of systems today that defy the normal rule based approach to solving both simple and complex problems. The technology has further taken the world years ahead.
  1. Internet of Things (IoT):  This technology has enabled a lot of interconnectedness in the world, making us able to connect and exchange data with our normal everyday devices over the internet. The technology has been employed in home security, smart contact lenses, enterprise asset management, predictive maintenance amongst others.
  1. Big Data Analytics: With a lot of data passing around in the information age, this part of technology extracts actionable insight from the different types of data (structured, semi-structured and unstructured). The insights extracted serve different purposes in different spheres of life, eg strategic advantage for businesses, research base for researchers, taking profitable positions for investors amongst others.
  1. Telemedicine: Technology has enabled a swifter Doctor- Patient relationship, as consultants can easily attend to their patients remotely, an action which is beneficial to both parties, as it makes work more convenient for the health care practitioners and it eliminates commute cost for the patients.
  1. WFH Tools: Who doesn’t like the idea of working from the comfort of their home? Right hand on my laptop keypad and left hand holding my burger? Information technology has made remote working possible. Especially since the global lockdown started, remote working has been the order of the day.
  1. 3D Printing: This is a fairly new technology, with an interesting use. This technology has made it possible to create a variety of prototypes such as vehicle parts, house, textile materials, prosthetic limbs and body parts, musical instruments amongst others.
  1. Information Security: Every organization is trying to protect their information. As individuals, the issue of security breach and invasion of privacy is not something to overlook. Information technology has made it possible for individuals as well as organizations to be able to keep private information securely.

Information technology will not rule the world, Information technology is ruling the world.
Hopefully, you are ready for more innovation that will come both with advancement in technology and time.

I know I might have not mentioned every aspect that information technology is ruling. Do well to mention them in the comment section below.

Thanks.
