A home network refers to a group of devices connected to each other and to the internet through either a wireless or wired network connection.
Ensuring the home network security is strong and up to date is an important part of network security.
In this short article I will be listing out 5 steps to ensure better home network security, let’s go:
- Change your home network name: Your home network name is a mix of the manufacturer and some alphanumeric numbers usually called the Server Set identifier. The SSID can be used by cybercrime perpetrators to identify the model of your wifi and the manufacturer, they may be able to look into the vulnerability of the model. Also changing your wifi name to a non-generic one helps to throw the scent off your network.
- Use of wifi protection system: use of Wifi protection systems like WPA 2, WPA 3 because they are newer and not vulnerable to a brute-force attack. The types of wifi protection systems are:
- Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
- Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)
- Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA 2)
- Wi-Fi Protected Access 3 (WPA 3)
- Use VPN for added security: The encrypting capability of VPN( Virtual Private Network ) serves as additional security for your network.
- Switch off your network when you are not at home: Turning off your network is a way to prevent hackers from trying to break into your network when you are not at home. Basic but simple prevent method.
- Constantly update your router’s firmware: Consider it a good practice to always ensure not only your router but other connected devices, operating system and all. components are up to date. To avoid the vulnerability of older versions.
